About 45 minutes from my house, in the green North Carolina mountains up around 4,000 feet, is a small farm known as Blueberry Heaven. All year long, I wait for the sensory experience of their pick-your-own season—feeling soft breezes from a blue sky, eating almost as many blueberries as I keep for the bucket, listening to the roaring mountain cascade next to the property, watching hummingbirds darting around. In this part of Appalachia, the mountains tumble away into the distance, much as in the ending of The Last Battle, and one gets a great longing to go bounding over them.

When my friends and I have picked as many as we can freeze, we head down the mountain to a modest little café called the Whistle Stop, obviously right by a railroad. Here, dining al fresco on their patio, we cap off the morning’s work with a grilled sandwich and happy conversation. It’s just an unbeatable day.

What tremendous privileges—to be ushered into this mountain sanctuary as Blueberry Heaven opens their blueberry fields to strangers, to enjoy the summer season, to taste and see that the Lord is good. With fresh peach season here now, too, I’m making peach-blueberry pies…an absolutely amazing flavor combination!!

Thank You, Father, for creating blueberries! So wonderful to eat, so easy to pick! Thank you for blessing us with foods that not only benefit our bodies but taste wonderful, too. May we catch a glimpse of Your marvelous handiwork in these blue jewels. In Your majestic name we pray, Amen.
