The Privileged Life: Clothing

IMG_7660“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was notarrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?Matthew 6:28-30

I’m not exactly well-dressed at the moment. I’m wearing my husband’s old gray jacket, a green T-shirt, jeans, and bright blue sneakers. Not a fashion plate. But I’m happy and comfy and warm on this cool evening.

I’m grateful for clothes. The older I get, the more I’m grateful for comfortable clothes. While it’s still fun to get dressed up, I find myself slipping into the same fuzzy socks, stretchy jeans, and silky-soft tops, all worn down by dozens of trips through the washer. They just feel good.

But whether I’m dressed to the nines or grunging it, I have to continually remind myself that what’s really important is how Jesus clothes me…with His righteousness.

If I see myself covered by His cloak of holiness, covering all the ugly sin-sickness in me, I know that’s how God the Father will see me…pure and lovely. If I have the heart of Jesus, it will be evident beyond whatever clothing I’m wearing at the moment…people will see His love and His power, not the earthly image visible to them.

As I thank Jesus for the beautiful garment of His grace, I am less interested in parading myself around in some snazzy outfit. Instead, I desire nothing more than sharing His love and blessing with others…so that they, too, will want to be dressed in righteousness by Christ!

Clothe me, O Jesus, with the loveliness of Your grace and righteousness. Make my face radiant by Your presence. Adorn me with the gems of Your love and mercy. Make me a beautiful image of Your redemption story. In Your name I pray, Amen.
