“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” Colossians 2:13-14
My Uncle Charlie is a talented craftsman with wood. He can take old, unwanted lumber and transform it into something beautiful, useful, valuable.
Not long ago, I asked him to make me several small wooden crosses to use as gifts and in children’s ministry on a medical mission trip. Charlie was happy to oblige…wanting to share in the gospel work, he crafted them for me out of an old walnut tree cut down on a friend’s property.
Those crosses had significance. I loved taking a bit of the Tennessee hills with us to the people living on the volcanic mountains in Ecuador.
What significance does the cross of Christ have in your life? Is it something you run across daily but don’t really see? Is it just a piece of jewelry you wear?
Or has the cross transformed your life? Does seeing the empty cross of Jesus Christ remind you that He endured death but defeated it for you by His resurrection? Do you recognize the heaviness of His sacrifice, that takes away the burden of your sins so that you can walk in the lightness of His joy?
Look to the cross. Lift it high, in your life and estimation. Recognize its significance. Let it inspire joy in you today.
O Jesus, what an immense love You have for me. What a horrific sacrifice and price You paid on Your cross for me. What an honor and privilege for me to bear my own small cross, whatever it may be, for You. Let me lift high Your cross today. In Your great name, Amen.
