The Privileged Life: Good News

IMG_7748

“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” Isaiah 52:7

Yesterday’s Scripture reference is worth repeating…for the blessing and privilege of hearing good news! Likewise, the author of Proverbs tells us that receiving good news is like “cold water to a weary soul” (25:25).

With a national media that bases its livelihood on viewership and ratings, we tend to hear mostly awful stuff in the news, whatever is most sensational at the moment. The 24-hour barrage of plane crashes, war devastation, weather disasters, and political ugliness gives us a media malaise and negative view of the world.

But focusing on good news—especially the Gospel, where Jesus Christ offers us salvation from sin, abundant life, and eternity in heaven—gives a deep breath of fresh air. Be thankful for every bit of good news, such as answered prayers for a friend who just texted a good report from his physician. Give God praise for every bit of good tidings—whatever things are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, or if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—and let your heart and mind meditate on these things! (Philippians 4:8)

God, please do not let us get bogged down in the negativity and despair of the world—remind us that You are in charge and that You have already won the battles raging here! Remind us of everything good and perfect in Your character, and help us to focus on sharing Your good news. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
