“Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.” Ezekiel 1:28a
Twice a year—for about a week before the vernal (spring) equinox and after the autumnal (fall) equinox, when spring or fall begins—a narrow beam of morning sunlight pours through an arched window in our entry way and focuses onto some prisms in our dining room light fixture. The effect is staggering—thousands of light fragments cover our walls, sending rainbows shooting in different directions.
It’s amazing. It’s like the Map Room scene in “Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark” when Jones searches for the Well of Souls with a prismatic pendant on a staff. It’s like Stonehenge in our house. It’s like the prisms scene in “Pollyanna”—on steroids. Every six months I start looking for this phenomenon, even setting an alarm so I won’t miss it!
The rainbows and light splinters last for maybe 10 minutes and then are gone as the sun moves further skyward. Like the heaven-arching bows after a storm, these colorful images are fleeting reminders of God’s power and love. They remind us that He is the One who set the sun, moon, and stars in place. He orchestrated the march of our planet and others in the solar system around our sun. He set the tilt of our earth at just the right position to send this flaming light into my home and His peace into my heart. Next time you see a rainbow, stop and gaze at the iridescent colors swept across the sky by His hand. Say a prayer of thanksgiving that God has blessed You with His presence in that moment.
Heavenly Creator, thank You for reminding us of Your presence, peace, and promises. Thank You for giving us such a beautiful earth to behold. Thank You for pouring Your light into our lives that we might shun the darkness and look only to You. In Jesus’ name, the Light of the World, Amen.
